Now, I'm not saying that IQ and SAT tests have anything to do with intelligence- I'm proof enough of that. I got a 1470 on the SATs, and I can't find my house from my school. Standardized tests are all about knowing the information and what you are exposed to. For example, I was well prepared for this test due to my vast experience with tests like it and (most likely) my education and upbringing. I know how to take tests well. However, this music correlation is VERY interesting to me- as I said, what is important is what you are exposed to. The reading material, music, art, people, games you play, ect. all impact how you interact with the world. It would be interesting to see if some music simply DOES stimulate your brain in a more profound way than other music. Or perhaps, it doesn't- and us Radiohead and Sufjan fans are just as stuck up as people say

I got a 1450 on my SATs... and i listen to Lil Wayne on a regular basis... But i also listen to Classical when i study... but yes, correlation does not equal causation... there is a third variable in this research that one needs to take into account and i believe that it is income... People who generally listen to rap / hip hope generally do not have the educational opportunities as someone who listens to classical... BTW, SAT prep courses don't really help with your SAT scores. I think on average, they only improve your score by 50 points

I'm a musician,not American, but this whole study seems to have racist undertones. Like "let's put the black folk down even more! " I think whether you score well on this SAT might be at least partly related to socio-economic status and educational opportunity rather than your listening habits. Eg; Jazz scores lowly on this survey yet is a high-end black American art form. Amongst musicians, whether they like it or not, it is regarded as one of the most difficult styles to successfully perform, combining deep cultural knowledge, incredible instrumental skill and amazing creativity; improvising, composing on the spot. Now, true purveyors of this art form would have to have some understanding of the intricacies of jazz, so how could you infer that they're dumb? I'm guessing your SAT doesn't test musical intelligence.

I know about the whole "race & historical educational disadvantage" thing...but I just don't agree with it. My parents and their families lived in poverty and grew up in huts in the South Pacific. Had to learn two languages besides their dialect to attend school. Worked hard to come to the US and now they are doctors. Hard work, determination, and want for a better life is all it takes- no excuses. But this is just my opinion.
