R.I.P. Paul Newman

Oscar-winning actor Paul Newman died from cancer last night, leaving behind his actress wife Joanne Woodward, four children, and an 83-year-legacy of good films and good-doing.

The philanthropic, former teen heartthrob retired from movies last year amidst his long battle with cancer, which he never publicly acknowledged. He also leaves behind a program for sick children and his Organic Food Foundation, which he used as a means to donate to charity.

Robert Forrester, vice-chairman of Paul's foundation, released a statement about his friend's death today:

• 'Paul Newman’s craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.

• Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humor, and humanness. His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much.

• We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person.'

Paul had said he'd like to be remembered as 'a guy who tried, tried to be part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being. Someone who isn't complacent, who doesn't cop out.'
 
Shouldn't be too hard to help him out with that.
