The film takes its theme and its name for the ancient Mayan calendar that predicts the end of the world to take place in the year 2012. The film is bound to deliver tons of CGI sequences of floods and catastrophes consuming the surface of the earth, but is there a half-way decent storyline to go with the visual effects?
Judging from John's track record of political activism and his latest film, War, Inc., perhaps audiences can entertain the hope that 2012 will be the start of a politically and socially aware disaster movie trend. Then again, it might just be another link in the already weak chain of computer-made disaster movies.
Luckily we won't have to wait until 2012 for this one; it's scheduled to be released in the summer of 2009!
