The problem with carrying around an extra 50 pounds of muscle is that the second you stop neurotically exercising, that muscle goes soft and... you end up looking like former Olympic medalist Ian Thorpe.

It's less likely that muscle "goes soft" than it gets covered with fat. Looks like that's what's happened here.
